It started simple enough. The sounds of children playing. Laughing. Generally having a good time.

Which was never a bad thing. He actually liked the sound of children playing. Which was why he rose to go and see them, to watch the simple joy of a child at play.

They played around a merry go round. They were joyous and playful. There were 13 of them.

As he looked closer, he saw that three of them were missing feet. Six were missing hands. All of them were bloody.

Shit. Oh, shit. He didn't even pause as he ran outside -- door, window, it didn't matter -- trying to reach the children. To help them.

He ran, and they were gone. The sound of laughter off in the distance. It was as if they were just out of his reach. If he turned to find them, it wasn't hard. There they were, right there.

Which meant that he kept running. Kept chasing the sounds of the children, to try and get to them before something terrible happened to them.

Something terrible already had. But they kept playing. Just out of reach. Just far enough away that he would never reach them.

He fell to his knees. Always too late. They were always out of reach. He covered his face with his hands.

"Please. Please, God. Please. Let me help them. Just once, let me save them."

When he stopped, they stopped. The laughter slowly being mixed with that sound that always drove knives into him. The sound of fear.

"Just this once," he prayed, though he already knew what he would do.

He jumped to his feet, moving at a full run, toward the sound of the children and their fear.

The screams grew in intensity and volume. And always, they were ahead of him, Until they weren't. And he was right in the middle of them. Smelling the blood. Seeing the dying bodies. But one little girl, about seven years of age, was still breathing. Still trying to scream around the fact that she no longer had a tongue.

Oh. Oh, God. He reached for the child, trying to call upon his medical training. What could he do to help her? How could he help.

"I'm here. I'm here."

He was there. He could try now.

She looked up at him with nothing but fear, starting to scream louder. Struggling to get away from him.

He shook his head, trying to still keep her calm. The screaming and struggling would only make her situation worse.

"Shh. I'm not going to hurt you. I'm here to help you. Please? Let me help you?"

She wasn't going to stop struggling. She was trying desperately to get away from him.

As if it had been him that had done this to her.

He was shaking his head.

"Honey, you need to calm down. I can't help you if you keep doing that. Please? I'm not going to hurt you..."

And with growing horror, he started to look around. To see what sort of carnage was actually still there.

Bits and pieces. That was all that was left of the children.

But there was almost no blood. Not nearly enough for this much carnage.

He turned back to the little girl -- the one still breathing.

"Honey, what happened? Who did this to you?"

He had to ask, even though he thought he knew -- and dreaded -- the answer.

She couldn't talk. She had no tongue. But as she struggled, she seemed to be avoiding his face the most. His mouth and his eyes.

She could still point.

"Who, honey? Where did he go?"

She pushed at him. Telegraphing easily that it was him. He was who did this. And she just wanted to die.

He was horrified. Definitely horrified. He brought his hand up to his chest.

"I did this?" he whispered.

He was distracted, so she started crawling away. She had no where to go, but she wanted to just...get away.

He was scrambling after her, to try and catch up to her. Because he wanted to help.

"No, no, no, no...."

She wasn't hard to catch, and when he did, she screamed louder. No words were possible, but she was terrified.

And she was slowly bleeding out.
